Family Support

An intensive 6-8 week intervention programme that supports children and their families to manage challenging behaviour.  It is intended for any child who has difficulties engaging socially or academically and for children with special education needs who may show associated, challenging behaviours.

After an observation and targeted questioning, an assessment is made of the child’s abilities and behaviours. An individual plan is then designed which intends to address any identified difficulties in the child’s thinking skills.

The programme incorporates play, discussions and paper based tasks that children enjoy and readily engage with. Parents and carers work with the trainer to further develop their own skills in order to continue supporting the child’s thinking after the programme is finished.

Each child will have a tailored programme of activities to address one or more of the following:

  • Impulsive behaviour
  • Recall and memory deficiencies
  • An inability to concentrate
  • Weak comprehension
  • Friendship issues
  • An inability to see the “bigger picture”
  • Stunted creativity
  • Inability to engage academically
  • …and any challenging behaviours associated with ADHD, anxiety, Autism, Downs syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Attachment Disorder, language development, sensory processing disorders, neurodevelopmental and intellectual disabilities, emotional regulation and any other deficiencies in fundamental thinking skills.

Konnections will provide children and parents/carers with the skills, strategies and techniques required to address challenging behaviours or undesirable habits.

How it Works

The Konnections' trainer will come to the child’s home for an initial assessment and parents/carers will complete a questionnaire. An assessment can take up to 3 visits depending on the child’s level of engagement. Following the assessment, an individual programme is designed. The programme is intended to last approximately 6-8 weeks and for the trainer to deliver 1-3 sessions per week.

The length of each session is determined by the needs of the child; usually between half an hour and an hour. Parents/carers are expected to fully participate in all the sessions and continue the mediated learning techniques throughout the length of the programme and beyond. At times, if appropriate, the sessions can also include grandparents, siblings, the child’s teacher or any other significant person in the child’s life.

All resources are supplied by Konnections and are included in the cost of the programme. Parents and carers also have the opportunity to ask for additional support during and after the programme.
